In the world of travel writing, there are a few “Holy Grail” experiences. A cruise to Antarctica, a few nights at the Amangiri in Utah, a luxe stay at the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris. Among these bucket-list trips is an African safari—and I finally got to go on my first one this month. (Two Travel + Leisure stories coming soon!)

When an email from Wilderness hit my inbox several months ago—inviting me on a trip to a couple of safari camps in Zimbabwe—I knew I couldn’t pass it up. And I immediately began plotting my green, khaki, beige, and brown outfits. I already had some pieces, mostly from L.L.Bean and Lands’ End, in my wardrobe, but I needed a few more. While I did buy a couple of brand-new items, I also scoured eBay for vintage pieces; the sleeveless Ralph Lauren shirt and the linen button-down below are both eBay finds.

There were so many aspects of being on safari that I absolutely adored—coffee and tea in the bush, sundowners, falling asleep to the sounds of elephants and hippos. I also loved the simplicity of having a uniform. Everything in my duffel bag was easily mixed and matched, and even after eight days in Africa, I still felt excited to put together my outfit.

Luggage

When you go on safari, you’ll find there’s a luggage limit of about 44 pounds per person. You also can’t bring a hardshell suitcase. Luckily, I had already tested the perfect bag, my Longchamp Le Pliage Original XL Travel Bag, on February’s trip to India, so no issues there.

I also brought two film cameras for the trip, and I kept them safely tucked into the NOMATIC McKinnon Camera Sling Bag. It’s a bit pricey, but if you’re someone who travels with cameras (and you definitely should when you’re on safari), you want to keep them safe. The material is also water-resistant, which came in quite handy when one of our boats took on water while traversing the Zambezi.

Tops

As I mentioned, two of my MVPs of the trip were from eBay, but I found a similar sleeveless shirt and a nearly identical linen button-down. I also took this L.L. Bean utility shirt. Right before I left for Africa, I saw a video of someone on safari saying how they wished they hadn’t brought so many T-shirts; you either wear long-sleeves for early morning and evening game drives or tank tops during the day. They were right. That said, I did wear this simple Madewell T-shirt under this layerable, 30+ UPF Paka hoodie for a few game drives.

Bottoms

For pants, I stuck with three categories: these stretch cargo pants (two pairs), linen pants (which also worked for travel days and post-game drive dinners), and linen drawstring shorts (two pairs). For years, I’ve turned to J.Crew for linen pants, and this drawstring style is probably my favorite from the brand. I also made a last-minute Athleta trip to grab these high-rise, wide-leg linen pants, which I received a number of compliments on.

Shoes and socks

I kept my shoe selection simple. Water-resistant Lems boots—I wore them for the first time on this trip (technically a travel faux pas), but they were comfortable right off the bat. Sandals to wear around camp—you want to bring ones you don’t mind getting dirty. And New Balance sneakers—because I didn’t want to wear boots for the 24-hour travel days. These Paka trail socks were also equally warm and breathable; even in boots, my feet never overheated.

Dress and coat

Readers of this Substack will recognize this machine-washable, striped long-sleeve button-down dress; yes, I bought it in the beige/brown color for this trip. And honestly, it was, once again, a win. I wore it for dinner and for in-Africa travel days. For my outerwear, I went with another eBay find, which is similar in color, structure, and function to this Barbour jacket. Alex Mill also carries a similar, cheaper style.

Accessories

My best piece of advice for putting together a safari packing list is to not underestimate your accessories. I found that by bringing a few simple, packable pieces, I was able to keep my outfits feeling new and fresh each day. I wore a scarf like this either around my neck or head for extra sun protection, and around my mouth when the dust got a bit much during game drives.

I never left camp without these polarized Caddis sunglasses, attached to an eyeglasses chain I picked up in Victoria Falls (similar to this or this), or a hat—I love a solid-colored baseball hat. A belt and this travel wrap, another piece I’ve talked about on repeat, completed the safari lineup.

An assignment for Southern Living has brought me to Palm Beach, Florida, for the next 48 hours. It had been a few years since I’d been here, and I’m very much appreciating the sun, the heat, and the lounge chairs by what I’ve always said is my favorite hotel pool. Tucked at the back of the Brazilian Court Hotel, it’s quiet, lush, and the perfect place to write, read, and nap.

Since this was my first beach-adjacent trip of 2026, I had to dig through my clothes to find the warm-weather staples that I’ll pair with a few recently aquired pieces, including my new favorite linen drawstring pants and the under-$30 dress I became obsessed with while in India. I packed everything in just my Louis Vuitton duffel (a treat/investment purchase I made in Milan a couple years back) and my trusty Tom Beckbe tote—the latter of which I keep organized with a couple of these summery Vera Bradley pouches.

A beach trip is the easiest time to pack lightly; you really only need a few key pieces. I went with a beige, black, and white palette for Palm Beach—a combination I’ll likely stick with until fall.

Dress that doubles as a cover-up

You may have seen I wore the blue striped version of this button-down dress in India. Well, when I got back from that trip, I immediately grabbled the khaki/beige striped colorway, too. I purposefully bought it for a trip to Zimbabwe in a couple weeks, but I also decided it would work for a boat day down here in Palm Beach. It’s also on sale this weekend, and I’m tempted to get another color…

Linen pants

I don’t think I’ll ever own enough pairs of linen drawstring pants. They’re my go-to travel-day bottoms (always with the same sold-out oversized Ralph Lauren button-down I mention in every packing list), but I also wear them as a bathing suit cover-up, with a nicer tank top or dinner, or a T-shirt for more casual daytime activities. This year, I’ll be rotating between this pair from Madewell (they do run a little small), these I snagged on Amazon last year, and a beloved J.Crew pair.

Linen shorts

I also picked up these drawstring shorts from Quince for Africa next month—I am very excited to write that packing list—and I think they’re going to become essential on all my coastal travels this spring and summer.

Basic tanktops

I’m fully in the camp that a quality tank top is worth a little extra money. I bring my Tank Air tank top and Good American bodysuits (I have it in black and white) on nearly every trip. Both are honestly great purchases, and I wear them with my Sticky Cakes.

Oversized button-downs

I am devastated that Ralph Lauren no longer sells my favorite oversized button-down—thankfully, I had the foresight to buy three—so I had to do some digging to find similar ones. This type of shirt is just so versatile and breathable, and I like to wear it at the airport, to dinner, or over a bathing suit. This poplin one from Frank & Eileen is probably the most similar silhouette-wise, and this J.Crew version is on sale.

Swimsuit

My black Andie one-piece has lasted at least three summers now, and I have no plans to replace it (unless I decide to buy it in other colors). It’s flattering, supportive, and comfortable; no bathing suit I’ve tried since can beat it.

Sandals and sneakers

I brought two pairs of shoes to Palm Beach: sneakers, similar to these New Balance ones, and an older pair of Gucci slides. While my sandals have been sold out for a while, I think these from Madewell have a similar vibe (and can be worn with most outfits).

Beach bag, earrings, straw hat

If your personal item doesn’t double as a beach bag, grab a canvas tote you can fold into your suitcase. Other essentials: cheap earrings (read: ones you wouldn’t mind losing in the pool or ocean) and a straw hat, which I highly recommend carrying through the airport via a magnetic hat clip. It’s a game-changer.

I knew packing for seven nights in India—with a 24-hour travel day on either end of the trip—would be tough. But I didn’t realize how hard it would be until I saw that three of my domestic flights had strict weight limits: 15 pounds for a carry-on and 7 pounds for a personal item… At first, I panicked. My itinerary included a tiger safari (article coming to Travel + Leisure later this year), a formal event in Udaipur, and temple visits in Khajuraho. And I wanted the perfect outfit for each occasion.

While the Indian airlines never actually weighed my bags, I did manage to pack accordingly—huge shoutout to this Longchamp duffel bag, which weighs several pounds less than my go-to carry-on bag.

Luggage

Longchamp Le Pliage Original XL Travel Bag

I firmly believe the Longchamp Le Pliage Original XL Travel Bag was the MVP of my trip. It weighs less than a pound, and it easily held a week’s worth of clothing and two pairs of shoes. While I did get tired of lugging it through the airport—I boarded eight planes over the course of nine days—the handles never dug into my hands.

Antler Icon 2-in-1 Tote Backpack

Since one hand was already carrying my duffel, I knew my personal item would need to be a backpack—so I went with my Antler Icon 2-in-1 Tote Backpack. Packed with my laptop, other electronics, and a plastic bag filled with toiletries, it came right in at the 7-pound limit. It also doubled as the perfect safari bag (it doesn’t show dirt or dusty easily).

Dresses

Mirth maxi dress

As soon as this trip was booked, I immediately started scrolling through the Mirth website. The brand’s products are partially produced in India, and I knew the light fabrics would be crucial for the hotter days in Udaipur (my city guide will be live on Travel + Leisure soon). This particular style, the Vienna Maxi Dress, also comes with a removable tie belt, an easy way to change up the look on wear No. 2 or 3.

Striped long-sleeve button-down dress

I don’t typically love an Amazon dress, but I have to say: This is one I’m going to buy in more colorways. It’s oversized yet flattering, versatile, and, honestly, higher quality than I expected for the price tag. I wore it several times on the trip as my travel-day dress.

Figue black and white dress

When I saw my itinerary included a formal event, I knew I wanted a dress that could either be casual or elevated; you never know what “formal” actually means. I thought this Figue one was perfect. Fair warning: It is a splurge.

Tops and Bottoms

I am forever a fan of linen sets for traveling, particularly when I’m headed somewhere warm. This Left on Friday linen button-down shirt and matching bottoms, which can be mixed and matched, caught my eye right before the trip—and I’ll likely be wearing the pants on repeat with a white tank top all spring and summer.

This post is coming to you live from India (on assignment for Travel + Leisure), and it’s been about five full days since I got off the longest flight of my life. From Washington, D.C. to Dubai was a solid 13.5 hours. I then had a six-hour layover before another 3.5 hours to Delhi. Admittedly, I was nervous about this long-haul, red-eye flight—and I spent the two weeks prior to departure carefully thinking through my game plan.

I despise being uncomfortable or unprepared while I’m traveling—the impetus of this Substack—so I wanted to make sure I was ready for everything: the dry air, the layover, the soreness. Granted, I was flying business class with Emirates, which made things significantly more comfortable, but I’ll be repeating the packing list below for incredibly long flights (not in business) this spring.

A personal item that zips: MZ Wallace Large Metro Tote Deluxe or the Antler Icon 2-in-1 Tote Backpack

Typically, I would have brought my roomy MZ Wallace Large Metro Tote Deluxe as my personal item, but I was conscious of weight restrictions for the flights I’d be taking around India during this trip. So I went with the Antler Icon 2-in-1 Tote Backpack. This was actually the first time I’ve traveled with this style, and I was delightfully surprised with how much it holds (laptop, chargers, toiletries, camera). I also appreciated the zip top—you don’t want things to fall out while the bag is under the seat in front of you—and the versatile handles and straps. I mainly carried it as a backpack, but I utilized the tote bag handles when deplaning.

Toiletry bag: Kusshi Neoprene Small Train Case

I’m always testing new toiletry bags, and I’ve officially found my new favorite one: the Kusshi Neoprene Train Case. It’s taller than toiletry bags I’ve used in the past, but it isn’t bulky. The small size can hold 20 to 25 products (more than I brought with me to India), and the neoprene material is washable.

In-flight toiletries: Moisturizer, lip balm, contact solution, mini toothpaste

I knew dryness was going to be an issue on this flight. I already have dry skin, so I’m militant about carrying moisturizer and lip balm. For this trip, I went with the Dieux Mini Air Angel Collagen & Peptide Hydrating Gel Cream and multiple lip balms (this one from Nuxe is my favorite)—and I made sure my contact solution and toothpaste were easily accessible. When I landed in Dubai, I went straight to the bathroom to freshen up; this was imperative before sitting for another six hours, waiting to begin the second leg of the journey to India.

Face cleansing wipes (that don’t require water)

The 4AM Clean Sheets were an absolute game-changer for me. I didn’t want to have to wash my face in the airplane or airport sink, but I also had zero interest in not washing my face for a full 24 hours. That’s when I remembered an ad I kept seeing for these cleansing (and moisturizing) towelettes that don’t require water. The box comes with 25 individually wrapped towelettes, and I slid a couple of them into my toiletry bag. They also came in handy after a dusty safari through Panna National Park (more on that when I write my India packing list next week).

Mini exercise ball, eye mask, headphones, and portable power bank

Along with skincare items, I also packed things that would help me deal with the sheer length of the journey. This hip flexor release ball is a godsend for my tight hips and glutes (it’s bigger than a lacross ball, but still packable). This memory foam eye mask was recommended to me by a massage therapist. My Bose noise-canceling headphones travel with me everywhere, and I always carry a portable power bank to charge my phone. You never know when the plug in your seat will malfunction—and you don’t want to arrive at your destination with a dead phone.

Over the last few years, I’ve leaned heavily into my personal item bag. Before every travel day, I make sure it’s stocked with snacks, all of my electronics, my toiletry bag, a book, and an extra layer. During a flight, I like to have my essentials nearby—and packing some of the bulkier items in my personal item allows me to fit more in my carry-on suitcase. That said, I tend to go for tote bags that are on the roomier side (but still compact enough to fit under the seat in front of me). If you ever see me at the airport, I’m likely carrying either the MZ Wallace Large Metro Tote Deluxe or, more recently, the Tom Beckbe Classic Camo Carryall.

But I also know these two styles aren’t for everyone—some travelers gravitate more toward backpacks—and I put together a list of the ones I’d recommend, based on who you are as a traveler.

For the Recovering Overpacker: MZ Wallace Large Metro Tote Deluxe or the Tom Beckbe Classic Camo Carryall

Tend to pack more rather than less? I have two personal items for you. If you appreciate pockets, go for the MZ Wallace Large Metro Tote Deluxe—more colorways here. The material is incredibly flexible but still high-quality, and I’ve never had any issues shoving it under the seat (even when it’s completely full). The Tom Beckbe Classic Camo Carryall is a similar size, just without all the extra pockets. My favorite features, though, are the exterior slip pockets, which are perfect for keeping a water bottle upright and easily accessible.

For the Minimalist: Cuyana Tall Easy Tote and Classic Easy Tote

Cuyana has long been a brand I recommend to fellow travelers. The leather bags and accessories last forever, and the simple, elegant designs are genuinely timeless. For personal item bags, I like the Cuyana Tall Easy Tote and the Classic Easy Tote (I’ve previously written about the latter for Condé Nast Traveler). They’re not quite as spacious as the two personal items above, but they can still fit a decent amount—and they make a bit more sense, looks-wise, for business travelers.

For the Mom: Dagne Dover Dakota Neoprene Backpack

I’m not a mom, but I frequently travel with friends who are—and several of them swear by the Dagne Dover Dakota Neoprene Backpack. You get all the hands-free functionality of a backpack, without looking like you’re about to go to school (or go hiking). This particular style also comes with a laptop pocket, a tablet sleeve, a zip top pouch, and a shoe bag, all of which aid in travel-day and in-flight organization.

For the Ready-For-Adventure Guy: Yeti Crossroads 27L Backpack

“My go-to personal item on a plane is the Yeti Crossroads 27L Backpack. Yes, Yeti, the cooler company, makes luggage, and they make my favorite travel bag. It’s got everything you need on the outside: a tough exterior, featuring some give if you overpack it (but sturdiness for when it’s standing upright), with a trolley sleeve, sturdy shoulder straps, and loops to hang or buckles to strap things onto the exterior.

Inside are dedicated zippered pockets for your laptop and cords, with a generous main compartment with a water bottle sleeve (that fits their Yonders and Tumblers perfectly). It’s waterproof, comfortable to wear, and keeps everything in place.” -

“If I’m headed right off the plane to work, I opt for a smart-looking messenger bag just for my essentials (for on the plane and the meetings after landing). I traveled for work a grand total of 28 times in 2025, with assignments and press trips taking me to Hawaii, Alaska, Montana, Switzerland, Turks and Caicos, Colorado, and St. Kitts and Nevis, plus a handful of other destinations I’ve been lucky enough to write about.

With an average of 2.33 trips a month, I lived out of a suitcase for a good chunk of the year—and I spent a decent amount of time packing and unpacking. The frequency of travel, while exhausting, allowed me the opportunity to pinpoint the items that I turned to again and again, as well as the pieces that streamlined my packing process. Like the suitcase I always rely on. The packing cubes and pouches that help me stay organized. The sweater that always gets tossed in my tote bag.

Below, my 12 packing MVPS of 2025.

1. Away Bigger Carry-on

Unless I was traveling somewhere for a week or longer, I brought along my trusty Away Bigger Carry-on. I’m a staunch proponent of a hardshell suitcase—you’ll never catch me with softside luggage—and this is the type of suitcase you’ll use forever. Plus, it’s as roomy as carry-on suitcases come.

2. Compression packing cubes

I mostly use my compression cubes when I’m traveling somewhere cold—Scotland, Switzerland, Wyoming, etc. The dual-zipper technology keeps the bulkiest of pieces (like sweaters and down jackets) more compact and gives me a bit more space to pack other items.

3. Travel wrap

This travel wrap was a Q3 purchase, and it’s since become an essential part of my airplane uniform. I also recently read that traditional Chinese medicine suggests keeping your neck warm on a drafty plane to stay healthy, and this certainly does the trick.

4. Oversized button-down

I’ve written about my love of an oversized button-down several times over the last year. I wear a now sold-out white version of this Ralph Lauren style, and I can confidently say it’s joined me on at least 90% of my 2025 travels. It’s casual enough to be worn for a travel day, but it’s incredibly easy to dress up with jewelry and a bright lip color for dinner at an upscale hotel.

5. Drawstring linen pants

These Banana Republic linen pants—so many good colors!— are similar to an old J.Crew pair I wore all summer long. They’re more elevated than leggings or sweaters, and I like to pair mine with a matching T-shirt or sweater. (A monochromatic look is my secret to looking presentable after a red-eye flight or long travel day.)

6. Travel pouches

This was the year I became obsessed with using travel pouches. I carry two or three in my personal item bag on every trip. One for snacks—I’m gluten-free, so traveling with my own food is crucial—one for cords and chargers, and one for important documents and items (like my passport, wallet, and local currency).

7. Sunglasses lens cleaner

It’s not completely necessary, but I realized I was traveling way too often in sunglasses smeared with my fingerprints. This little portable lens cleaner was an easy solution.

I just got back from a week of skiing in Switzerland—story coming out in Town & Country next month—and I immediately unpacked and threw everything into the laundry for a quick turnaround to another ski town with below-freezing temperatures: Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I’ve done a Switzerland packing list and a ski trip packing list in the past, so I figured I’d change things up for this one.

To keep it brief, here’s how I pack for any cold-weather destination, featuring my most-worn winter boots (this is my fourth season bringing them on every trip) and the base layers I return to again and again.

Start with the proper footwear.

I was gifted a pair of lace-up, waterproof, shearling-lined La Canadienne boots years ago, and I’ve been raving about them ever since. Unfortunately, I can’t find the exact style anywhere online anymore, but this one is functionally similar—waterproof, same materials, lots of traction, and, most importantly, super warm. Leave any boots that won’t hold up to moisture or aren’t designed with traction at home.

Invest in decent socks.

Now’s not the time for slightly worn-out cotton socks. Instead, bring Smartwool socks. Trust me, they’re worth it (and they still let your feet breathe).

Bring base layers (even if you’re not skiing).

Jeans or a pair of leggings and a cotton long-sleeve T-shirt aren’t going to cut it in cold temperatures. You need to have base layers, preferably ones made of merino wool, to wear if you’ll be spending a decent amount of time outside. I’m partial to Halfdays base layers, but I also have a set from Amazon.

Sponsored: Months ago, I (organically) shared how I’ve been bringing a pair of Cakes on most trips, instead of packing a regular bra. The Grippy Cakes Circles are my go-tos, but the brand recently came out with a few different versions, including Sticky Cakes Circles. While I don’t wear them as often in the winter, they do come in handy if I’m wearing a tank top or a silky top to dinner. Bonus: They make for a great stocking stuffer for the traveler in your life.

Don’t underestimate a mid-layer jacket or vest.

I like to have some sort of mid-layer in my suitcase, whether I’m skiing or sightseeing somewhere cold. Right now, it’s either this North Face vest or a fleece jacket similar to this Columbia one. Both serve as extra layers of defense—or, if the temperatures unexpectedly warm up, they can replace my heavier coat.

Pack a couple of winter accessories.

I’ve never really been big on scarves or hats, but I got this Amazon travel wrap a couple of months ago and have been using it as an extra layer. It’s perfect if the restaurant is slightly chilly (but not cold enough to wear a jacket) or if you want to wear it as a scarf while outdoors. I also love my Hestra gloves; they have removable liners, so they’re incredibly versatile

Be thoughtful about your heavy coat.

You only have room for one heavy coat (and you’ll be wearing it in transit), so you have to make it count. Before leaving for Switzerland, I carefully monitored the weather app, and temperatures in St. Moritz and Zermatt were frequently in the 20s. So I knew I’d need something extra heavy. Luckily, Overland gifted me this reversible sheepskin coat ahead of the trip; I wasn’t cold once. If you’re not a fan of fur, consider one of these two down styles (and note the neck protection, too).

Don’t forget the loungewear.

This is one packing mistake I’ve made a few times. I get so focused on having outfits for outdoor adventures and fancier dinners, I forget that I’ll be spending a significant amount of time just lounging indoors, possibly by a fire. Now, I always make sure to pack at least one pair of somewhat elevated sweatpants (like these from Aritzia) and a sweatshirt or cozy sweater.

Back in the summer, I promised myself I would spend more time at home in the fall. June, July, August, and September were filled with back-to-back trips—Montana, Jackson Hole, Western North Carolina, Nevis, Lanai, Wrightsville Beach, Switzerland, Alaska, and Vail (story coming to Travel + Leisure soon)—and I deemed October my official “no travel” month. No planes, no packed suitcases (hence the radio silence over here).

Along with much-needed sleep and a solid routine, the break gave me the bandwidth to do a full audit of my closet. Over the years, I’ve accumulated more clothes, bags, suitcases, and travel accessories than necessary—and when I’m constantly on the go, quickly packing and unpacking, the organization can get out of hand. Translation: piles of clothes in my room, things shoved into the very back of my closet. That leads to not knowing what I actually have, which then results in buying doubles, last-minute purchases, and more stressful packing.

So a few weeks ago, on the heels of the furniture brand Thuma kindly gifting me a life-changing new dresser, I went to work organizing my evergreen and winter clothes. I knew late fall and winter were going to be packed with flights, and I wanted to make sure the process of trip preparation would be as seamless as possible.

Now, everything has a place—white T-shirts, black tank tops, my favorite base layers, leggings, sweaters, etc. As I was packing for a friend’s wedding in Chicago last weekend, which would be followed by a quick trip down to St. Kitts (where I’m writing this from), I felt less hectic. I knew what I needed to grab and didn’t have to dig through a mess to find it.

All that to say, this inspired me to share other ways I prepare for travel in between trips.

• Organize clothes: I’m a stickler for immediately throwing my dirty clothes (always shoved in a packing cube) into the laundry when I get home. Putting them away, however, is my weakness. Still, I try to place them in their proper home after the wash and before my next trip. Otherwise, I’ll inevitably have a guest bed overflowing with items that either didn’t quite make the final cut or things that I think I’ll need on my next trip.

• Clean suitcases: I always try to give my most-used suitcases a solid wipedown every month or so. Sure, there are probably proper ways to clean them, but I stick to a two-prong method: multi-purpose cleaning spray on the shell, bed bug spray on the zippers. Just in case.

• Take stock of toiletries: I will drone on and on about how organizing my travel-sized products into these clear plastic drawers solved so many of my packing issues. Last month, I was able to go through them, figure out which items needed to be tossed, and refill them with my go-tos: TSA-compliant toothpaste, face wash, and bottles of contact solution.

With all of my clothes neatly folded away and toiletries restocked, I’m now approaching shopping for trips in a more mindful way. I know exactly what I need, what I don’t need, and what I have room for in my closet. Here’s what’s currently in my shopping cart (or on the way to my house).

Packing toiletries used to be my least favorite part of travel. I’m very Type A in the fact that I like to have everything I “need” with me—from specific hair products to every step of my skincare routine—so it always felt like an overwhelming task.

Then, a couple of years ago, I decided to put in a bit of time, effort, and research to streamline the process. I bought clear shelf organizers for my bathroom; now, these hold all of my Sephora samples, small hotel toiletries, and the below travel-sized products. I also stock up on the mini versions of products I can’t easily consolidate into small containers—things like contact solution and toothpaste. Now, when it comes time to get all of my toiletries together, I’m able to quickly “shop” from my own shelves, throwing them in one of my go-to Dopp kits (also below).

At the same time, I’ve tested more than my fair share of lotions, serums, etc., attempting to identify the non-negotiables that come with me on most trips. For context, I have incredibly dry skin, and plane travel tends to take its toll—so moisturizing products are usually at the top of my list.

Toiletry bags, pouches, and containers

July Open Toiletry Bag: I try to stick to just one pouch for all of my products. While my go-to toiletry bag is actually no longer in stock (RIP Paravel), this version from July is a similar size.

Stoney Clover Lane Small Pouch: I do love Stoney Clover Lane pouches—I have a couple that I rotate between for toiletries, snacks, and electronics—but they are expensive. These Amazon Nylon Makeup Bags are a solid dupe, though.

Clear Makeup Bag: Depending on where I’m going or what I’m doing, I’ll sometimes opt for a clear toiletry bag. My current favorite is also sold out, but this under-$20 version is pretty similar.

Cadence Capsules: I’ve been using Cadence Capsules (magnetic, leakproof, reusable containers) for about 3 years now. Yes, they’re pricey, but they keep me from having to repeatedly buy TSA-compliant versions of my regular shampoo and conditioner.

Travel-sized products I always have on hand

2-ounce bottles of contact solution: Basic, yes, but incredibly helpful if you’re someone who wears monthly contacts. I’ve found that one bottle can last me a solid 10 days on the road.

0.85-ounce Crest toothpaste, 12-pack: If you, like me, use a toothpaste that comes in a relatively big tube, I’d recommend keeping a few of these tiny tubes in your bathroom cabinet.

Travel skincare

Beauty of Joseon Day Dew Sunscreen: I’ve been a fan of this Korean skincare brand for a while, and this sunscreen goes on easily and is the perfect size for travel. (It does have a slight “sunscreen” smell, though.)

Dieux Instant Angel Lipid Rich Facial Moisturizer: At home, I use the Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream; when I’m on the road, I like to bring this 0.85-ounce facial moisturizer from Dieux.

Drunk Elephant C-Luma Hydrabright Vitamin C Serum: I’ve rotated between Vitamin C serums over the years, and this Drunk Elephant version is a recent discovery. While I like the glow it gives, I also appreciate its packaging; the twist top and pump aren’t at risk of an accidental spill while in transit.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta® Universal Daily Peel Pads: I cannot say enough good things about these anti-aging, exfoliating pads. I only use them once a week (the package says every day, but that would be way too much for most people…), and they’ve eliminated any need for me to get a regular facial. If I’m traveling for more than just a couple of days, I’ll throw one of them in my bag for a mid-trip brightening.

MERIT Great Skin Instant Glow Serum: If I have room in my toiletry bag, I’ll sometimes bring a bottle of Merit Great Skin for an extra boost of glow and hydration.

NUXE Rêve de Miel Ultra Nourishing Lip Balm: I refuse to travel without lip balm. Lately, I’ve been toting around this honey lip balm I bought in Paris a couple of years ago (it lasts forever).

As a travel journalist, one of the questions I’m frequently asked is: “How do you decide where you go?” Sometimes, an assignment requires me to travel. More frequently, an invitation or my own interests spur the trip; when I’m on the ground, it’s my job to find a story (or even a few) to pitch to editors when I’m back. It can also be a bit of a mix of factors, as was the case for a recent trip to Alaska.

A couple of weeks ago, I flew to Anchorage for a Travel + Leisure assignment—or three assignments, rather. In August, I got it in my head that I really wanted to see the bears feeding on salmon in Katmai National Park and Preserve (story coming soon). I did some initial research, pitched a few angles, and worked with the Alaska tourism board to plan the trip. While there, I also explored Kenai Fjords National Park and took the scenic route aboard the Alaska Railroad—in total, I spent four full days in Alaska and two full days in the air.

Due to the nature of an Alaska trip—outdoorsy, rainy, variable temperatures—I had to be extra thoughtful with my packing process. I did not want to cold, wet, or overdressed, and I also wanted to pack as light as possible. And, I have to say, I think I nailed it with the below packing list.

Outerwear

Whenever I’m building out a packing list, I tend to center it around a few core pieces. For this trip, it was this the Halfdays Mary Rain Jacket (and the matching Bastille Train Pant). I always appreciate a brand that is able to marry function and fashion, and the slightly oversized, boxy silhouette of the jacket feels a bit more elevated than a typical raincoat. It also worked perfectly as my everyday jacket and was roomy enough to layer as necessary. As my boat approached glaciers in Kenai Fjords National Park, I was thankful for the extra bit of warmth this fleece North Face vest provided beneath the jacket.

I spent one of my mornings in Alaska kayaking around Resurrection Bay. The pre-trip email from the guide had one request: wear waterproof gear. Instead of the Halfdays jacket, which I wanted to keep fresh for my adventures the rest of the day, I wore this packable yellow Stio jacket (similar, cheaper version here).

Tops and light layers

I swear by sticking to a specific color palette when traveling. It’s the easiest way to mix and match, and it helps me narrow down what I want to pack to what I need to pack. For Alaska, I stuck to mostly blues—this breathable, smocked longsleeve from Halfdays (which I wore on my excursion to Katmai), a North Face halfzip, and a Lululemon tech fabric shirt.

Bottoms

I immediately knew leggings weren’t going to cut it for this trip. Not only are they not waterproof, but they’re not exactly warm, either. I did pack one pair, though—my favorite Spacedye leggings from Beyond Yoga—which I then wore underneath the Halfdays Bastille Trail Pant when hiking and under these $36 Amazon waterproof pants when kayaking and cruising.

Shoes, bags, and accessories

I was initially concerned about footwear for this trip. I didn’t necessarily need my heavy hiking boots, but my sneakers aren’t waterproof. But then, I was introdueced to Seavees. The Ballard Boot was my saving grace. Not only are the boots waterproof, but the low-top makes them more packable than your typical pair. I wore them right out of the box without any issues—even when walking 15,000 steps in Katmai. For my travel days, I went with a simple pair of New Balances.

The other MVP of my Alaska trip was the Away Featherlight Crossbody bag. It carried my waterbottle, book, two cameras, snacks, a power bank, phone, wallet, and even an extra layer. While in transit, I also used my Calpak Laptop Duffel Backpack (the roomiest backpack you’ll ever use) and, of course, my Away Bigger Carry-On suitcase.

Two last things to round out the Alaska packing list: a nautical-inspired bucket hat and my new favorite pajama set (under $30, washable, and super soft).

August has been a month of back-to-back trips—from Hawaii (where I learned a new trick for dealing with jet lag) to the North Carolina coast (a T+L guide to Wrightsville Beach coming soon) to Switzerland, where I spent three days in the tiny village of Andermatt. This weekend, I’m headed to Alaska to see the bears in Katmai National Park, so expect a full packing guide for that trip next.

Because I’ve only had a few days at home in between each trip, I’ve almost been on autopilot when packing. I grab the same suitcase, the same packing cubes, the same jeans, the same bathing suit, the same toiletry bag. A few pieces change here and there, but for the most part, I have a solid lineup—and I’m sharing my go-to pieces with you below.

My Carry-on Suitcase

If you read this Substack on a regular basis, none of these picks should be a surprise. Apologies in advance if this is a little repetitive. Starting with the best carry-on suitcase I’ve ever traveled with. I firmly believe there is no other carry-on on the market that can hold as much as the Away Bigger Carry-On. It’s simultaneously sturdy and flexible, and the shell and zippers are strong enough to withstand a bit of overpacking. If you haven’t invested in one yet, now’s the time: It’s currently on sale.

My Checked Suitcase

In the exact same vein… The Away Large suitcase will forever be my favorite checked luggage. Mine has seen its fair share of baggage claims and bumped along miles of brick and stone streets, and I have zero complaints. It’s also on sale over Labor Day Weekend—so it’s a good time to stock up.

My Packing Cubes, Travel Pouches, and Toiletry Bag

I have two sets of packing cubes that I use—this Away set and this set from Amazon (that’s currently marked down). They’re not classic compression cubes, but they’re super versatile; I’ll usually bring an extra one to use as my laundry bag. For even more organizational help, I’ll pack a couple of these Stoney Clover Lane dupe pouches in my personal item bag—one for snacks, one for cords and chargers. As far as toiletry bags, I use a clear one from Paravel (which I just saw is no longer in business), but this Away version is very similar.

My Personal Item Bag

I’ve been an MZ Wallace convert for a while now. Not only is the Large Deluxe Metro Tote incredibly roomy, but I have also never had any problem fitting it under the seat in front of me (even when it’s packed to the brim). The only issue I have with it is the fact that it’s so big and has so many pockets. I’m often digging through it trying to find exactly what I’m looking for—but that’s also where those aforementioned pouches come in handy.

There are some trips I have no issue packing for. Everything seems to come together easily—I lay out the various pieces, I put together outfits, and I have no trouble zipping my suitcase. A recent trip to the Hawaiian island of Lanai, where I stayed at Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort, was one of those trips.

For that, I mostly credit the fact that I went with a black-and-white color theme. I packed a couple of bathing suits, tank tops, skirts, linen pants, and the oversized button-down I’ve been wearing on repeat over the last few months (I’ve worn it so often, I also bought it in blue stripe). This combination had just the right amount of function and versatility, and I never once experienced any packing regret—although I probably should have brought more casual sandals for a hike around Hulopoe Beach.

Tops and bottoms

I’ve worn this black Playa Lucila elastic waistband skirt on nearly every trip this summer. I also have it in red gingham and black gingham. It really is the simplest way to elevate a basic tank top (like this white one or this black one). I’ll wear both with Cakes instead of a regular bra. I think my favorite thing about this outfit strategy is that I can dress up the look for dinner with jewelry—these gold Amazon waterdrops are my current favorite—and it never looks like I’m trying too hard, which is the exact aesthetic I like to go for when I’m in a tropical destination.

Besides the aforementioned button-down, I also packed these new Rag & Bone white drawstring jeans. Yes, they’re a bit pricey (currently on sale, though!), but they’re similar to these La Ligne drawstring jeans I’ve talked about before. They have the look of denim pants while still being comfortable enough for a travel day. These white linen shorts were a well-worn addition as well.

Bathing suits and cover-ups

I’ve worn my Andie one-pieces so much, it’s probably time to invest in new ones. They’re relatively supportive, and I’ll wear them under a sarong or one of the Playa Lucila skirts I mentioned above. Summersalt has similar bathing suit styles, too.

Sandals, sunscreen, and other accessories

My friend introduced me to this sunscreen from the brand Vacation—and I’ve since become a full convert. Her selling point? It’s 3.12 ounces, so you can bring it with you on the plane. The gel consistency ensures it goes on smoothly, and the product doesn’t leave a whitecast.

Other items I’d recommend packing for Hawaii: sunglasses, sandals you don’t mind getting a little wet or dusty, chapstick (Lanai was surprisingly dry), and a beach tote. I’ve been hauling my L.L. Bean Boat and Tote everywhere this summer.

Because I’m on the internet a good part of the day, often scouting out luggage deals for publications like Condé Nast Traveler, and frequently testing all manner of travel products, I have some strong opinions on what you actually need (plus, what is technically a good deal, not just a marketing play).

Carry-on suitcases

I swear by my Away Bigger Carry-On. It’s the only carry-on suitcase I’ll travel with on trips longer than three days (it fits a solid week’s worth of clothes), and I’ve never had a problem getting it shut. This post was supposed to have been sent last week, but in between horseback riding through the Crazy Mountains in Montana (Travel + Leisure article coming soon), fly fishing on the Missouri River, and hiking through Glacier National Park, I, admittedly, didn’t have the energy to put the final touches…

Now, I’m writing this from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where I got to be one of the very first guests of the Sylvan Lodge, a brand-new hotel in Snake River Sporting Club (another T+L article is in the works, too).

My suitcase for this Wyoming trip is a bit heavier than the one I packed for Montana—I needed a few nicer pieces for various events—but I brought mostly the same things: denim, button-downs, cowboy boots, a few additional layers, and plenty of activewear. After spending time out West over the last few summers, I can confidently say I’ve nailed the outfit formula (and no, it doesn’t include a Kemo Sabe hat).

Tops and bottoms

I always start the packing process for a Western trip with denim. It’s heavy and bulky, so I try to stick to just two pairs. Since I knew I would be doing lots of horseback riding in Montana, I picked up a new pair of Ariat jeans—they’re high-waisted and bootcut and stretchy enough to be comfortable on long rides, but they still have shape. I also brought my favorite Madewell barrel jeans to relax in.

As far as tops, I packed a long-sleeve denim button-down, a couple of sleeveless Ralph Lauren button-downs I got on eBay (similar ones here and here), one of my oversized sweaters, and a well-worn Anine Bing sweatshirt. While in transit, I wore a vintage suede fringe jacket I picked up last year at a vintage shop in Jackson (similar one here). I was able to mix-and-match most everything, so I never felt like I was repeating any combo too often.

Hiking clothes

I love Western wear as much as the next person, possibly even more so, but if you’re going to Montana (or Wyoming, Colorado, or Idaho) in the summer, the denim, gingham, suede, and cowboy-adjacent accessories have to be complemented by clothes you can actually wear to enjoy the great outdoors.

In Montana, my mom and I did some hiking through Glacier National Park, and I brought along my favorite Lululemon tank tops, another tank with a built-in bra I got on Amazon right before the trip, and my all-time favorite workout shorts—just order one size up from your regular size. I also added a light flannel button-down for the chillier mornings and evenings.

Shoes and other accessories

I packed three pairs of shoes for Montana: one of my (probably too many) pairs of cowboy boots, water shoes for fly fishing, and hiking boots. I’ve alternated between these Danner and Columbia hiking boots for years, and neither of them has ever given me blisters.

Other pieces that that made it in my suitcase: a bandana, a packable hiking backpack, sunscreen, sunglasses, crew socks, and several different sizes of Aquaphor. Don’t underestimate how dry Montana can get in the summer.

Every summer for the past few years, I’ve planned a trip to the Caribbean—St. Barts, Anguilla (I wrote about this dreamy hotel for Travel + Leisure), St. Martin… and this summer, Nevis. It’s the off-season, which means flights are generally cheaper and the islands are less crowded.

Packing for these types of trips is also incredibly straightforward. A couple of bathing suits—see the most flattering, supportive bikini top below—some coverups, maybe a nice dress or two, and a pair of sandals. I also like to follow a color scheme; my summer wardrobe is filled with blues and whites anyway.

The only slightly annoying part is packing sunscreen. I’ll typically have a few TSA-sized bottles on hand and purchase a big bottle at my destination.

Travel-day outfit

This outfit is a slightly tweaked from the traditional airplane uniform I shared in my last newsletter. I refuse to arrive on an island in anything heavy, but I would also never wear shorts on a plane. So I switch the jeans for linen trousers with an elastic waist, pair them with a simple tank, and I’ll throw a summer cardigan or light sweater on over my shoulders (just in case the plane is chilly). I also keep my sandals in my personal item bag (which doubles as a beach bag) and change right from my sneakers right before I disembark.

Swimsuits and coverups

I finally achieved what I believed to be impossible last year: finding a bikini top that is supportive, has back coverage, and is incredibly comfortable. The matching bottom is also amazing; it provides support around the stomach, and it doesn’t dig in anywhere. I now own this LSpace set in both black and white (and I will never purchase another bikini again). Although I may have to invest in the light blue soon…

Right before I left for Turks and Caicos last month, I snagged a couple of coverups on Amazon (I couldn’t find mine from last year). One is a simple sarong; it’s ideal for turning a bathing suit into a semi-appropriate outfit for a casual lunch. The other is an SPF tunic—perfect if I’m heading somewhere on a boat.

A sun hat

A sun hat (like this or this) is a must-have for me. Summer in the Caribbean is hot, and the UV index frequently reaches or exceeds nine. I usually go for a hat with a strap, and I’m a big fan of a hat clip—so I don’t have to carry the hat in my hand while in transit.

Sundresses

Admittedly, I have a solid rotation of sundresses, and I’ll add a few new ones each year. My favorite Mara Hoffman dress is now discontinued (one size here, though!), but I have one rule for any sundress I bring to the Caribbean: It can’t require a bra. I love a halter dress (like this white one from Tuckernuck), a flowy dress that’s a bit more supportive in the bust (like this blue and white dress from Apiece Apart), or one that’s super oversized (this Frank & Eileen dress doubles as a coverup).

While all three trips were decidedly different—Sea Island was a mix of fishing, clay shooting, and fine-dining; the Horse Shoe Farm was more rustic and relaxed, and Pine Cay is strictly island vibes—my suitcase honestly didn’t change all that much (aside from a few key pieces). I’ve been leaning heavily into the same outfit formula: a new pair of denim trousers that I’m obsessed with, a tank or t-shirt, loose linen or satin trousers, and a vintage men’s Ralph Lauren sweater that I found on eBay.

I’ll rotate the tank or t-shirt and switch out my sneakers or cowboy boots for my favorite pair of slingbacks (expensive, but the cost-per-wear is incredible) for a dressier dinner, but this combo continues to serve me well.

Travel-day uniform

These La Ligne wide-leg jeans are as comfortable as sweatpants (there’s even a drawstring). I have worn them on every single flight in the last two months—even when I had 3:30 am wakeup calls. I’ve been wearing them with either this white tank top or this bodysuit tank, then layering on the oversized Ralph Lauren sweater (or throwing it over my shoulders, depending on the weather).

For the most part, I’ve been wearing them with these Nike sneakers and some sort of dad-style baseball hat and Ray-Ban Wayfarers. I also like to keep a pair of sandals in my personal item bag; that way, when I arrive somewhere like the Turks and Caicos or Sea Island, I can do a quick change before getting off the plane and stepping into 80-plus degree weather.

Tops I have on rotation

This is the year that I’m going all in on quality staples. I don’t want decision paralysis when I’m packing; I travel too often to deal with that stress. Instead, I’m curating my wardrobe around a few simple pieces. This summer, it’s going to be a rotation of these: Leset Margo t-shirts, a Commando bodysuit, or a boxy Madewell t-shirt.

My favorite carry-on luggage

I know, it features in nearly every Substack or shopping article I write… but you won’t catch me going carry-on-only with any bag other than the Away Bigger Carry-On. I’ve been using it religiously (anywhere from two to four times a month) for over… six years now? One of the zippers on the inside snapped from an unsuccessful overpacking attempt, but I refuse to use anything else. It’s just the best on the market. And as far as packing cubes go, I’ll typically rotate between the ones I have on hand, but it’s usually some combination of these and these.

That said, there are a number of new subscribers here—and if you’ve signed up for this newsletter, you want packing tips and recommendations. So I’m officially back on the twice-a-month cadence, starting with the Miami packing list I promised in my last newsletter.

Back in January, I traveled down to Miami in search of some warm weather and sunshine at Four Seasons Hotel Miami—which I wrote about in a recent Kayak article. While the low 70-degree days didn’t quite hit the spot, my best friend and I were able to enjoy several hours of reading, napping, and chatting by the pool. We even managed to stay up slightly later than normal, venturing out into Little Havana for mojitos and classic Cuban food.

My packing list for this trip included mostly old favorites from last year—but it also got me thinking about the beachwear and other tropical clothing I’ll want to add to my rotation for other trips this summer…

Pool-day attire: Crochet pants, a one-piece, and an oversized cardigan

My favorite part of packing for a trip like Miami is that I don’t really need to bring daytime clothes. I go from bed straight to the pool or beach, where I’ll camp out until it’s time to get ready for dinner. That said, I still make sure to pack separates that can serve as a cover-up of sorts, just in case I opt for a non-poolside lunch.

Shoes and accessories: Ray-Bans, sandals, and a personal item that also works as a beach bag

When I’m traveling somewhere warm, I try to only pack one pair of sandals. They should be versatile enough that they can be worn to the pool, out to lunch, or even during the travel day (although I prefer to wear lightweight sneakers on the plane). I’m also a forever fan of my Ray-Ban Wayfarers, so those come with me everywhere. When I fly somewhere tropical, I swear by the “travel hack” of bringing a beach bag as my personal item. It just has to be sturdy enough to hold my laptop and toiletry bag while in transit.

Dinner outfit: Basic but elevated tank top, trouser-like denim, and platform heels

These days, when I say I’m going to “dress up,” I usually mean some sort of jean (either a wide-leg, barrel-leg, or trouser style) paired with a simple top and a chunky heel or slingback. It keeps things easy, especially when I’m traveling multiple times a month, and it’s a combo that can be dressed up even further with a chunky gold earrings and a red lip.

My luggage: Away Bigger Carry-On and packing cubes

As always, my Away Bigger Carry-On traveled with me from Charlottesville down to Miami, and I kept everything you see above tucked away in these packing cubes. I do keep testing different suitcases, but I can honestly say none have come close to the Away version in terms of durability and spaciousness. I’ll keep you updated, though.

I’ve since come to my senses. I’d rather have one ski look than endure the stress of tight layovers paired with winter-weather delays and praying my checked bag arrives to my destination.

With a couple of early-season ski trips under my belt this year, I put together my essentials for any ski trip, including my favorite ski socks (I also wrote about them for Travel + Leisure), the shoes that carry me through the winter, and base layers I don’t mind wearing for a solid 12 hours.

Warm, water-resistant boots and ski socks

My exact La Canadienne boots aren’t sold anymore, but this pair is extremely similar. The lace-up style is versatile, the shearing lining is very warm, and the waterproof material is much needed when trekking through snowy terrain. As far as actual ski gear, my favorite socks are from Bombas — though this Halfdays style is already giving them a run for their money.

Ski jacket and bibs + base layers

I’m clearly a full Halfdays convert. I love their outerwear — this snow jacket and these bibs in particular — and nearly all of my base layers are also from the brand. I have a few different sets, but this new version (I have the top and bottoms in the alpine green) is a bit lighter and less formfitting. I like them better for warmer days on the slopes.

Travel-friendly layers and pants

Depending on where you’re skiing, you might not even change for après-ski activities. Still, you’ll probably want some “regular” clothes for travel or dinner. I always pack one sweater (more than that will add unnecessary bulk), one trouser-type of pant, and a layer-able turtleneck.

Other cold-weather essentials

I’ve tried a few different gloves in my lifetime, but I can definitively say that these Hestra gloves keep my hands the warmest (even when I’m skiing in Jackson Hole). I also love that they have a removable fleece liner; if my hands start to sweat after a grueling run, I’ll remove them and tuck them in my jacket. As far as headgear, I love this balaclava; it’s comfortable under my helmet and it keeps my face protected from wind and snow.

These fleece-lined leggings are another important addition to my packing list. My legs tend to get chilly when I’m on the ski lift, so I like to wear them over my base layers.

Bulk-friendly luggage

When I went out to Snowbasin right before Christmas, I only brought my Away Bigger Carry-On and a backpack. The latter was a Calpak style I was testing for the first time. Safe to say, this spacious bag is now officially in my travel rotation.

Right before Thanksgiving, I headed down to Quercus — a 5,000-acre, privately owned estate just an hour outside Atlanta (full review on Travel + Leisure coming soon). The weather forecast was ideal: slightly chilly and a bit of sun, meaning I had full rein to break out my barn jacket, denim button-downs, and cowboy boots. In between sporting clays, exploring the property via golf cart, eating exceptionally well, and bonding with horses, I spent lots of time in my cabin, decked out in my coziest attire, accompanied by my latest Sarah J. Maas read and a roaring fire.

Here’s everything I packed — all of which I’d recommend for any trip where you achieve that ideal balance of outdoor activities and doing absolutely nothing.

Chunky, waterproof ankle boots

Yes, you may have seen these in last month’s newsletter… and yes, I wore them again. They’re a nice alternative to hiking boots (and they look better with jeans).

Comfortable cowboy boots

Collecting cowboy boots has become a hobby of mine. I found my current favorite pair at a vintage pop-up in Wyoming, but I’m also a staunch fan of Tecovas. Their boots don’t need a break-in period, and the quality is always solid.

Crew socks

Since the cold weather arrived here in Virginia, I’ve been on a crew sock kick. These are especially cute and fit the “at home” vibe of the resort.

Top: Versatile denim, oversized denim button-down, turtleneck dress

Packing rule of thumb: Spend time finding the jeans that you love, and stick with them. I’m partial to Madewell styles (though the sizing is a bit all over the place). I’ve also been doing a lot of denim on denim lately, courtesy of an oversized button-down, like the style above.

When I’m traveling during the fall or winter, my suitcase usually contains a wrinkle-resistant (like a knit) turtleneck dress. It’s just the right amount of elevated, so you always have something “dressy” to wear, but it’s also casual; you won’t look out of place if the setting is less casual than you anticipated.

Middle: Oversized sweater, simple long-sleeve tee, my most flattering leggings

After I packed my denim and dinner attire, I knew I wanted to lean into all things cozy (but still relatively put-together). A good sweater, an easy top, and leggings did the trick.

Bottom: Baseball hat, sweatpants, quarter zip sweatshirt

My Sunday night flight home resulted in a flat-out 0.7-mile sprint through the Charlotte airport to make my connection. Thankfully, I was wearing clothes I could move in, and I could hide my sweaty face with my baseball hat.

My favorite carry-on suitcase

This was a quick two-night trip, so I brought my trust Away suitcase. This plus and duffel or tote bag as a personal item is my go-to luggage recipe.

Barn jacket

I’m fully on the barn coat trend — though, I will say, I have been wearing mine for a few years now. I truly think it’s the perfect travel coat. It’s durable and keeps out the cold, but it’s not a nuisance to bring on the plane.
